Step 4
in the
FORMIDABLE Business -
Momentum
Every business must have Momentum moving it forward towards its
desired outcomes. Traditionally this approach has been called
business planning. However, business planning has never realised
its full potential with small to medium sized enterprises because
it has traditionally been a time consuming exercise and rather
boring exercise.
In the
FORMIDABLE Business
, Momentum is a stream lined approach to making things happen in
your business. It does not fall into the traditional
trap of over analysing the business but focuses on outcomes and
activities.
Business operators need action based Momentum at each level of
their business. Momentum must be directed and consistently
applied. Specific breakthrough strategies are used to keep
the business moving forward.
Often the progress of a business is dependent on the business
operator being totally responsible for 'making things happen'.
This will not work because business operators are too easily
drawn into the day-to-day operations of the business. As
a result the business lurches forward with a series of unrelated
bursts of activity from the operator responding to circumstances.
Whilst the operator is an important factor in providing
direction, there needs to be other systems and resources, such as
Breakthrough Strategies, that ensure Momentum is developed and
sustained.
Breakthrough Strategies are a set of specific actions that allow
Momentum to be implemented. There are numerous barriers that
have held your business back in the past from moving forward.
The process for implementing Momentum requires that these
barriers be identified and removed or minimised.
Too many operators believe their initial enthusiasm for the changes
will be enough for things to happen – it won’t. There needs
to be a sustained plan of activity. You don’t run a marathon
by sprinting the first 1,000 metres! Breakthrough Strategies
are used when the business operator is ready to implement change
into their business.
The implementation of the changes must be a process that is managed
and carefully thought through. This stage is where the
business plan often fails. Frequently all the thought and
effort goes into the analysis and construction of the business
plan, without the necessary consideration of how the business
planning process will be implemented.
